These findings are fascinating, and perhaps relevant to the events transpiring now. I heard that the U.S. accidentally let a bomb drop on an Afghani wedding. Give me a break. What happened to our long years of military testing, pay raises, recent attention to the military, all of these things that are supposed to make the military capable of only killing the "bad guys" (that is, ending a war with as few deaths as possible)? Stuff like that makes me mad--or, more properly, what makes me mad is how little attention this has received, how little rebuke the military has received in the news. It's as if people don't care about this disgraceful mistake. And I won't even go into what the military deserves if this was NOT a mistake....
Anyway, the article is good. Give it a read.

Abdullah

Thank you very much for your kind message. Really, I received the web-site that you included your message as a gift from you. I enjoyed it, and I benefited not only of the article “Statistics of Deadly Quarrels”, but also the entire of the Site. There were many interesting things to me in the site, particularly about Arabic scientists and their role in Europe
http://americanscientist.org/articles/02articles/Saliba.html
..and so on.
As for you opinion in what happened at Afghanistan recently, I agree with every single word you mentioned. But, as you know, it’s not the first event and it will not be the last one! I just wonder, what is the advantage of the technological means if the US’ military can not distinguish whither it faces his enemies or just a poor wedding in a village at Afghanistan! So, even though this event was a mistake, it proved that the war itself was the essential mistake, and the US’ war on Afghanistan was just unjust emotional case of reprisal against a shadow of something there, its name is terrorism. It is the same mistake that Bush (the father) has made in Iraq! No difference between the son and his father!
Your opinions on such issues usually give me, as a person from another culture (or if you wish, counteractive culture), a deep hopeful that there are still some free people in the world. Those people can understand the human matters and can have open minds to share their thoughts and hopes with the others. This stand from you is not strange to me! I know you are a freeman and you could not be a brain washed of the media or the political sakes. No normal person can agree with every thing in his country, unless if he was a mount for the others’ dogma!

Chris

The heavy US support for Israel actually comes from Benjamin Disraeli, a British (Jewish) Prime Minister from the late 1800's who ruled that Jews should have their own territory, safe from persecution by others (he forgot to note that somebody already lived where he said Jews should live). This served as a base for a later magnification of Christian-Jewish friendship after the Holocaust. I can tell you as a fact, Christians feel AWFUL about the Holocaust. Everybody in the US and in Western Europe is still distraught over what "we" (we Christians, going all the way back to Spanish Catholics who violently evicted both Muslims and Jews from Spain; then continuing with anti-Semitism [meaning anti-Judaism in English, even though I would say now there grows a new anti-Semitism, against the Semitic people, Arabs] from medieval texts condemning Jews to pamphlets and hiring practices in the 1900's) did to the victims of the Holocaust. For a good portrayal of the delicate balance between self-loathing and self-excusement, you should watch the movie "Schindler's List," or go to the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.
I think it is mostly the Holocaust that makes Westerners so shy to tread on Israeli toes--Jesus' crucifixion has nothing to do with it. After all, Romans were involved in this as well, and Christians don't still hate Italians. In addition, most of the American Jews (and also a few Russian Jews) that I know who are around my age to not subscribe to their religious doctrines--many of them remain in the faith only to keep up traditions, or to keep up culture, or to honor victims of the Holocaust. Most of them are actually agnostic or atheistic in their religious views.
I do get the impression that the US supports Israel more than it should, but my hunch is that this is because of 1) British-US ties and history, and 2) more importantly, a fear of being anti-Jewish, in light of how the Holocaust has made even the slightest hint of anti-Semitism (current definition) incredibly distasteful.

Abdullah

You said that “Benjamin Disraeli, who ruled that Jews should have their own territory, safe from persecution by others, (forgot to note that somebody already lived where he said Jews should live).” This is exactly what Arabs have been trying to let the deaf world hear for more than fifty years ago! No one here demand more than what you did mentioned. I’m sure that even Osama bin Laden himself will agree with your statement! The human mind is the same, and the justice in the world is the same, but the sakes of people are different. Therefore, Benjamin Disraeli did not forget indeed, but he is a Jewish person, as well as the heavy US support for Israel is not because of the AWFUl about the Holocaust, but because of the US economical goals in the region. If it was for the west’s awful about the Holocaust, the Holocaust is not an Arabic crime; it’s a crime of Europe. So, they should give the Jews a land from Germany! Palestine is not in fact Jews’ “Promised Land.” The God is outside of this political game! It’s the promise of Arthur Balfour (1848- 1930), the British foreign minister. After all, Jews are looking forward more than Palestine, they plan to occupy Iraq, Egypt, and also the north of Saudi Arabia, as parts of their historical land, as they claim! If we agree with this radical logic, it means the whole world will go back to the dark ages, and every ethnical group should go back to its land, if it can know where its land was on Earth!
The “Promised Land” statement itself is a proof that Palestine was not Jews’ land before the promise! Moreover, you know, as a Christian, the God’s promise has its conditions, but Jews didn’t honor the God’s conditions. If that was the case, there was no “Promised Land”. It’s just a historical lie, by which they try to extort the whole world, as much as the God, himself. The story in Quran, by the way, is this:
[20] "Remember Moses said to his people: "O my People! call in remembrance the favour of Allah unto you, when He produced prophets among you, made you kings, and gave you what He had not given to any other among the peoples.
[21] "O my people! enter the holy land which Allah hath assigned unto you, and turn not back Ignominiously, for then will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin."
[22] They said: "O Moses! in this land are a people of exceeding strength: never shall we enter it until they leave it: if (once) they leave, then shall we enter."
[23] (But) among (their) God-fearing men were two on whom Allah had bestowed His grace: they said: "Assault them at the (proper) Gate: when once ye are in, victory will be yours; But on Allah put your trust if ye have faith."
[24] They said: "O Moses! while they remain there, never shall we be able to enter, to the end of time. Go thou, and thy Lord, and fight ye two, while we sit here (and watch)."
[25] He said: "O my Lord! I have power only over myself and my brother: so separate us from this rebellious people!"
[26] Allah said: "Therefore will the land be out of their reach for forty years: in distraction will they wander through the land: but sorrow thou not over these rebellious people.”
So, The Jews have been in our countries as citizens, like the Jews in the USA, now. My father’s friend, for example, was a Jewish person from Yemen, who was a smith man in the town! No problem was there between Arabs and Jews before Arthur Balfour’s promise, and the establishment of Zionistic nation in Palestine, which they call it Israel.
If we went back to religion’s beliefs, prophet Muhammad told us that Jesus will come back, at the end of the world, to Earth to establish the justice again. Then, Muslims with Christians will fight altogether to clear out disbeliveers and Jews from the holy lands!
Thank you again for giving me another chance to write to you, Chris!
